Matt Taylor, designer of the board game BreakScore, says "it's simply not good enough that the Ministry of Education's Team-Up website, promoted by former All Black captain Tana Umaga, only recommends generic and proprietary board games owned by US corporations. Taylor is also scathing that while a direct link to one of the largest suppliers of gaming cards to the global casino industry is provided, no links to NZ made board games have been provided." 

Taylor who's board game BreakScore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakscore was first published 24 years ago and is now in its 5th edition, says "Team-Up's decision not to recommend that families consider NZ made board games is fatuous, flawed and mis-guided. He says,"it is no longer acceptable for government agencies to discriminate against of the work of NZ artists, composers, writers and film-makers, and the work of NZ board game designers should not be the exception."

Taylor says "BreakScore is as good a family game, if not better, than any family games produced overseas" and urges immediate action be taken so that families accessing the Team-Up website are at the least given the opportunity to consider board games that are made in NZ. Furthermore, Taylor calls for Team-Up to honour or remove its anti-gambling pledge.

Board game publisher, Matt Taylor, says "there has been a marked increase in board game sales since the controversy emerged about Chinese made toys containing high levels of lead and other toxins."

Millions of Chinese made toys are currently subject to a world-wide product recall and this has raised the profile of board games and is proving to be a boom for one New Zealand board game publisher.

Matt Taylor, publisher of the board game BreakScore® says "there has been a significant increase in parents visiting www.breakscore.com since news of the high lead levels in Chinese made toys broke."

While many orders originate from overseas, Taylor says "the overall proportion of site visits coming from within New Zealand has jumped significantly, thanks in no small part to parental concerns about their children’s safety."

The rising NZ dollar makes New Zealand board game publisher think outside the square. Board game publisher, Matt Taylor, says "the rising NZ dollar is presenting considerable challenges to small exporters and predicts that if current trends continue export sales to the USA in particular will slow. Matt Taylor is however looking forward to the challenge of tackling the problem with the same innovation he used when creating the board game BreakScore®.

Taylor who markets the board game BreakScore® through his web site www.breakscore.com says "I have taken new promotional initiatives in New Zealand involving schools, correctional facilities and fundraising groups, that should take up the slack in overseas sales."

Unlike a number of manufacturers, Taylor will not be moving his production off-shore. Taylor says, "any such move would be irresponsible in terms of the social cost to NZ as if everyone did that there'd be no jobs left here.
