A brief history of board games and dice games. ![]()

According to scholarly research, board games and dice games were played in nearly all parts of the ancient world. Remnants of games have been found in many places including Greece, Egypt, India, Japan, Iraq, Israel, Hawaii and New Zealand. It is supposed that the earliest of games depended entirely on chance and that game players were apparently content to accept the premise that fate dictated outcomes. This view was based on their belief in the gods. However famine, drought and population growth saw tribes begin to practise organised warfare, which led games to be developed that were more based on strategy, logic and skill. The tribes wanted to be able to influence outcomes! The periods of peace and prosperity that followed such periods, saw games develop into popular recreational pastimes where game players sought to gain advantage even from seemingly unpromising positions. Archaeologists believe that before six-sided plastic dice became commonplace, artifacts carved out of clay, bone, stone and wood were used instead by game players. |
